Panic Attacks
A number of men I have treated admit to having some form of anxiety attack or panic attack that comes upon them suddenly, even when relaxing. The best way of dealing with this type of attack is to slow down your breathing. Take ten deep breaths, holding each breath for 10 seconds. This process increases carbon dioxide in the blood, which will allow the available oxygen to be released into the body’s cells and the natural balance to be restored. It is this imbalance that can cause anxiety to spiral into panic.
Treatment & Prevention Program
Avoid coffee, stimulants and hot, spicy food.
Supplements
Magnesium supplements, 1000 mg daily, to help normalise the rhythm of the heart and relax the muscles from daily stress.
St John’s wort: start with two tablets twice a day and then cut the dose by half as you improve. This has been shown to be very helpful in counteracting panic attacks. Taken long term, this herb not only alleviates anxiety but also eases the often detrimental effects of anxiety attacks after a virus.
A herb called passion flower mixed with a Chinese herb called Zizphus jujuba can assist with anxiety attacks if they are not associated with depression. Take one or two tablets after each meal until your condition improves, then reduce to one a day.
B12 and folic acid in a vitamin B formula: one tablet a day. If attacks are very severe then take a supplement which also includes SAMMe. Two tablets twice daily until better, then two every morning as a preventative measure.
