Pain Killers And Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
Painkillers reduce pain but do not treat the cause of pain. They work by blocking the transmission of pain signals to the brain. On the other hand the anti-inflammatory agents reduce inflammation and by reducing inflammation, they reduce pain. In practice joint pain product and anti-inflammatory drugs are used in combination.
Painkillers can cause drowsiness constipation. Painkillers like morphine are addictive. The anti-inflammatory drugs may cause indigestion and occasionally ulcers, rashes, drowsiness and fluid retention.
Most of the painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs work only for few hours. It is advisable to limit their use at times when pain is particularly bad and unbearable.
Steroids
Steroids including cortisone are a group of body hormones, which affect body’s metabolism. In arthritis they are used to reduce inflammation.
Small doses of steroids for a short time can provide relief without side effects. However, extra doses given for a long period can have a number of serious side effects. These include thinning of bones and skin, excess body fat, high blood pressure, cataract and other complications.
