Insomnia

There are many reasons why men are often restless sleepers. Poor diet, eating late at night, stress, anxiety and caffeine can all affect sleep patterns. Sinus problems (blocked breathing passageways), swollen tonsils and adenoids can also play a part in sleep apnoea and snoring, which can cause men to wake up tired each mornmg.

If you have a history of sinus problems, then this needs to be addressed with your medical doctor.

Supplements

The following supplements can assist men to establish much healthier sleep patterns. I suggest you start with a calcium supplement if you suffer from mild insomnia. Depending on the results, you may then work through the other supplements and see what is right for you, depending on the reasons for your insomnia.

Calcium: take a 500-1000 mg calcium tablet before bed and another if you awaken in the middle of the night. Many of my clients have great success with this if taken with a cup of chamomile tea.

Passion flower rapidly reduces stress and relaxes the nervous system. Take two tablets before bed for at least three to four weeks and then when required.

Zizphus jujuba;a Chinese herb, calms the nervous system. Take 3 mg before bed. Herbalists often mix this with passion flower, skullcap and hops.

One to two SAMMe tablets three times a day. This has been found to be useful, especially if your insomnia is related to depression or frequent jet lag.

Mexican valerian or Chamomile has helped some of my clients to sleep when under high pressure at work. This herb should be taken 15 minutes before sleeping: two tablets 20 minutes before bed. You may wish to use this herb when travelling.
