Digestion
Digestive problems are probably one of the most common health concerns for men today. Despite the fact that many men think they’re just something they have to live with, the good news is that common complaints such as acid stomach, heartburn, irregular bowel motions, flatulence and general digestive discomfort can all be radically improved. An acidic environment in the digestive tract is the most common reason for these complaints.
The main causes of acid build-up in the digestive system are:
- poor digestion
- overeating
- an excess of refined carbohydrates, inclu
ding white flour and refined sugar products - a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables daily.
I have treated many men with these digestive problems over the years; 90 percent respond extraordinarily well to simple changes in diet, and some general knowledge of what is actually happening to their digestive system. Food can broadly be divided into two groups: acid and alkaline, and it is vital that the digestive system has 60-70 per cent alkaline foods daily and only 30 per cent acidic foods to prevent common digestive problems. Sticking to this split will also increase vitality.
Acid creators - the negatives for digestion
- Refined sugar and white flour products
- Red meat
- Alcohol and stress also have a negative impact on digestion and can be classed as acid creators.
Alkaline creators - the positives for digestion
- Fresh fruit and vegetables
- All raw juices, especially carrot, watermelon and green vegetable juices (spinach, the top of beetroot leaves and wheat grass)
- Herbal teas
- Unpasteurised honey
- Raw almonds
- Miso soup
- Tofu
- Sea vegetables
- Lima and adzuki beans (other beans, except for those which are soaked and have sprouted, are acidic)
- Fresh deep-sea fish, such as flake, blue grenadier, orange roughy or John Dory (these are the least acid-forming protein you can include in your diet, apart from legumes which should be included with vegetables to balance an acid stomach).
